Biography:
Dr. Bin Xie received his M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees (with honors) in Computer Science and Computer Engineering from the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA, 2003 and 2006 respectively. His research interests are focused on heterogeneous wireless networks, sensor networks, mesh networks, LTE, and cognitive radio networks. In particular, he has performed substantial research works on the fundamental aspects of heterogeneous routing, channel assignment, resource management, performance evaluation, service-oriented architecture (SOA), and Internet/wireless infrastructure security. In the sensor network, for example, he has investigated sensor deployment, lifetime, data collection, object detection and tracking, layered sensor networks, sensor trustworthy, and security. Some of the research works are collaborated with University of Louisville, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Washington at Seattle, University of Michigan, NEC, and University of Massachusetts.
Dr. Xie has published three books titled Handbook of Applications and Services for Mobile Systems (Auerbach Publication, Taylor and Francis Group, ISBN: 9781439801529, 2011), Handbook/Encyclopedia of Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing (World Scientific: ISBN-10: 981283348X), and Heterogeneous Wireless Networks- Networking Protocol to Security (VDM Publishing House: ISBN: 3836419270). He has also published 60+ articles in the IEEE conferences and journals. Some of papers have appeared in the most-cited journals in the areas of Telecommunication and Computer Architecture.
Dr. Xie is the founder of Info Beyond Technology LLC and has worked on more than 10 projects. These projects are supported by U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Kentucky Science and Technology Corp, Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, and Kentucky New Energy Venture. Dr. Xie was the vice chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Simulation (TCSIM). This is an editor member of the Journal of International Journal of Information Technology, Communications and Convergence (IJITCC) and the guest edit chair of Elsevier Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS). Dr. Xie is the co-founder of CyberC international conference and serves as the Program Chair since 2009.He was invited as a TPC or a Program Chair in many international conferences (e.g., IEEE HPCC, ICC, Globecom, WCS, MHWMN, IDCS, UNC, DMWPC, and ICCCN). Dr. Xie is an IEEE senior member.
Summary:
In the last decade, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have experienced tremendous technical advances in a variety of civilian, healthcare, industrial, and military applications. These applications necessitate different performance requirements in deploying WSNs. Therefore, the WSN issues are extremely complicated and there are a number of technical challenges that need to be explored, with the consideration of the diverse applications. In this talk, we will explore some fundamental WSN issues on the concepts, protocols, algorithms, implementations, and results. The investigation of these issues enhances the capabilities for integrating sensing with computing and communication as well as for distributed fusion, coordination, aggregation, security, and control. Specifically, the focus of the discussion will be our previous works in related to these issues. Instead of discussing the existing works only, we will extend our visionto some recent research topics in WSN to open new research opportunities.
